Wonder Pictures studio publicity man Lanny Morgan hatches a calculated stunt to spark interest in actress Annabel Allison and her latest project. He has Annabel, who headlines a new film, briefly imprisoned as a publicity gambit, hoping the scandal will spotlight the star and the studio. Yet when news travels, the public’s eye misses the supposed drama: a month passes with little fanfare, and Annabel discovers Lanny has been fired for the failed ploy. Undeterred, he doubles down, quietly paying a struggling actress to pose as his ailing mother, a ruse designed to force a dramatic return of attention to Annabel and to secure his own position at the studio.
The studio chief breaks the bad news to Annabel: her film is canceled, and she is cast in a different project, the upcoming picture The Maid and the Man. In order to keep her in a headline-friendly role, Lanny arranges for Annabel to work as Mary, a maid for the Fletchers—an elderly couple, their teenage son, and their eccentric inventor, Major. In this setup, the young Robert Fletcher grows curious about Annabel, while the household duties—cooking, cleaning, and keeping up appearances—pull at her producer-driven plans. The dynamic is ripe for both romance and mischief, with Robert’s interest adding a layer of personal investment to the glossy world of publicity.
Meanwhile, investors connected to Major’s latest invention—a rubber ring placed around a plate to cushion it from a drop and prevent splintering—become a plot point in the morning papers. The story of “robbers” who supposedly plan to steal the invention read like a publicity stunt in itself, a calculated move to ride the wave of headlines and keep the publicity machine humming. In truth, these investors are waiting for their own spotlight to fade so they can slip away with their gains, a mirror of the film industry’s appetite for headlines above all else.
Back at Wonder Pictures, The Maid and the Man is scrapped, and Lanny rings Annabel with the latest update he’s ready to spin. She replies that she cannot leave the project she’s been placed into, and the two navigate a fast-moving web of schemes, publicity stunts, and real danger. Lanny’s plan shifts into high gear when he discovers Annabel’s police mug shot alongside those of the supposed robbers in the newspapers, prompting him to outfit around fifty extras as policemen. They march toward the Fletcher house, blasting blanks from their rifles, but the robbers—real criminals—fire back, scattering the makeshift police force and leaving Lanny to attempt entry all by himself.
When real law enforcement arrives, the robbers try to use Lanny and Annabel as shields, turning the house into a tense standoff. Yet Annabel’s training shines through as she uses her martial arts skills to throw one robber to the ground, while Lanny bites another, turning the tide of the confrontation. The confrontation ends with authorities arriving and the criminals receding, and Annabel returns to the studio with a mixture of relief and resolve, only to learn that her new project, The Maid and the Man, has another fate in store for her.
The new billboard for The Diamond Smuggler greets her as she exits, suggesting a glamorous path forward, but the studio’s plans take another sharp turn when she receives a gift that Lanny had arranged. The police uncover the jewels inside the package, turning Annabel’s moment into a confrontation with the very mechanism of publicity that has driven her career. With the jewel-laden gift confiscated, Annabel is dragged away in handcuffs or by force of circumstance, a dramatic end to the stunt that began with a prison cell and a headline.
From the front of the new billboard for The Diamond Smuggler, Lanny looks on as Annabel is driven away, her scream echoing the higher-stakes fantasy of fame—the dream of stardom entangled with schemes designed to spawn attention, sometimes at the cost of truth. The film leaves viewers with a sharp portrait of a publicity machine that can blur the line between performance and reality, where every twist in Annabel’s career seems orchestrated, and every outcome tests the boundaries of what a star must endure to stay in the spotlight.
