The film opens in the early 18th century, pitting Rob Roy MacGregor and his McGregor clan against the royal forces commanded by the Scottish Duke Campbell (/actor/james-robertson-justice) of Argyll. As Rob Roy fights to defend Highland honor, Argyll seeks to restore order in the Highlands and shows a certain sympathy for the locals, even resisting the use of German mercenaries against them.
