What's After the Movie
Philippe Noiret was born on 1 October 1930 in Lille, France, the son of Lucy (Heirman) and Pierre Noiret, a clothing‑company representative. His schooling was erratic; after multiple failed baccalauréat attempts he turned to the theatre, training at the Centre Dramatique de l'Ouest and later touring for seven years with the Théâtre National Populaire. It was during this period that he met actress Monique Chaumette, whom he married in 1962. A versatile performer, Noiret also worked as a nightclub comedian in a satirical duo with Jean‑Pierre Darras, lampooning political figures such as Charles de Gaulle and André Malraux.
Although his screen debut came in an uncredited role in Gigi (1949), Noiret’s breakthrough arrived only after a decade of modest parts, culminating in a starring turn in Yves Robert’s Alexandre le Bienheureux. He became renowned for embodying the Everyman, yet never shied away from controversial characters— from the gluttonous aristocrat in La Grande Bouffe (1973) to the melancholic elder in J'embrasse pas (1991). His performances earned him two César Awards (1976 for Le Vieux Fusil and 1990 for La Vie et rien d'autre) and a BAFTA for Best Actor for his role as Alfredo in Cinema Paradiso (1990). A passionate horseman, Noiret often rode with fellow actors Jean Rochefort and Jean‑Pierre Marielle. By the time of his death from cancer in Paris on 23 November 2006, he had appeared in more than one hundred films, spanning French classics, daring art‑house pieces, and Hollywood productions such as Hitchcock’s Topaz and Cukor’s Justine. His relentless work ethic, self‑deprecating humor, and continual curiosity about the craft of cinema left an indelible mark on generations of actors and audiences alike.
