Murphy’s War 1971

In the waning days of World War II, Murphy [Peter O’Toole] is the sole survivor of the Mount Kyle, a merchant ship that was sunk by a Nazi U-boat and whose crew were machine-gunned in the water. He washes ashore and finds a quiet, mission-minded settlement on the Orinoco in Venezuela, where he is tended to by the pacifist Quaker Dr. Hayden [Sián Phillips].

As Murphy recovers, he learns that the submarine is hiding farther up the river, concealed by the jungle. A consuming thirst for vengeance takes root, and he resolves to sink the U-boat by any means, even if it means risking his own life again. He scavenges a surviving Grumman J2F Duck floatplane from the Mount Kyle and tinkers with it, driven by the memory of the wounded pilot who was shot dead in his hospital bed by the U-boat captain in an act that compounds the earlier atrocity of firing on the living survivors.

From a shaky start, Murphy teaches himself to fly the fragile aircraft over the choppy river water, learning through trial and error how to coax the craft into flight and control. His reconnaissance finally reveals the U-boat’s hiding place, and he makes a bold, improvised attempt to bomb it using Molotov cocktails fashioned from what he can find. The strike fails, and the U-boat’s retaliation is swift, crushing the nearby mission settlement and scattering the people who had briefly offered him a semblance of peace.

Even after news arrives that Germany has surrendered, Murphy remains consumed by the urge for revenge. He hatches another plan, this time to ram the U-boat with a floating crane owned by Louis, a friendly Frenchman. The daring assault ends in failure when the submarine dives beneath the makeshift ram. Yet the fight is far from over: the U-boat becomes trapped in a mud bank, stubbornly waiting for rescue that never comes. Murphy seizes a final, desperate edge of fortune, retrieving an unexploded torpedo the U-boat had fired earlier and using it to strike down the trapped crew.

The collision of torpedo and hull seals his fate as the crane’s jib pins him to the deck, and the entire contraption sinks to the riverbed. The finale leaves the waterway quiet but heavy with consequences, a stark meditation on the line between justice and vengeance, and the human costs that linger long after the guns fall silent.
