Interactive previsualization using game engines so directors and DPs experiment with shots at production speed.


Overview

Real-time previs replaces overnight renders with interactive scenes directors can scout, light, and shoot virtually. Instead of static animatics, teams manipulate blocking, lenses, and lighting on the fly, capturing camera takes that translate into shot lists, grip plans, and even LED wall content.

Creative Advantages

Immediate feedback changes behavior: a DP can iterate on sun angle and filtration in minutes; stunt coordinators design action beats within accurate set dimensions; editors rough-cut sequences before construction locks. These loops surface problems early—sightline conflicts, rigging shadows, or dolly paths that collide with set pieces.

Pipeline and Handoffs

Assets flow from concept to DCC to engine with LODs and proxies that later upscale for finals. Virtual cameras record moves that guide techno crane programming. Lighting looks carry forward as reference for on-set gaffers and for engine lighting when scenes go to an LED volume.

Limitations and Discipline

Previs is suggestive, not sacred. Teams should avoid over-locking coverage that stifles discovery with actors. Asset fidelity in previs need not be film-quality, but scale, timing, and collision must be honest or sets will be mis-built. Version control and naming hygiene prevent chaos when departments reference the same scene.
