Clip Gain: Meaning & Definition in Film

Clip gain is a feature in audio editing software that allows for the adjustment of a specific audio clip's volume level independently of the main track fader.

Pre-Fader Volume Control

Clip gain is a fundamental and powerful tool in any modern Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), such as Pro Tools, which is the industry standard for film sound editing. It provides the ability to change the volume of an individual audio clip—or even a selection within a clip—before that audio reaches the main volume fader for the track.

The Dialogue Editor’s Best Friend

While useful for all audio elements, clip gain is most indispensable for dialogue editing. A dialogue editor receives all the production audio from the set, which is often inconsistent in volume. A character might turn away from the microphone, causing a word to be too quiet, or shout a line that is much louder than the rest. Clip gain allows the editor to quickly and easily level out these inconsistencies.

For example, if a single word in a sentence is too quiet, the editor can:

  1. Isolate that single word by cutting the clip on either side of it.
  2. Use the clip gain control to turn up the volume of just that one word.
  3. Heal the cuts to make it a single clip again.

This is far more efficient than writing complex volume automation with the track fader. By using clip gain to handle all the micro-adjustments and create a consistent dialogue track, the re-recording mixer is then free to use the main track faders for broader, more creative mixing decisions. It is the primary tool used to ensure dialogue intelligibility and consistency.
