The Final Command Before Action

‘Lock it up!’ or ‘Quiet on the set!’ is one of the most vital commands in the filmmaking process, typically issued by the 1st Assistant Director (1st AD). A ‘set lock’ or ‘lockdown’ is the immediate, disciplined response to this command. It is the final step in preparing the set for a take, creating a controlled bubble where the performance can be captured without any external interference. The moment a set lock is called, all non-essential activity ceases, and every member of the cast and crew freezes in place and falls silent. This ensures that the sensitive microphones on set only record the actors’ dialogue and intended sound effects, free from coughs, whispers, or footsteps.

The Lockdown Procedure

Executing a set lock is a coordinated effort managed by the Assistant Directors and Production Assistants (PAs). The process involves several key actions:

• Securing Access: PAs are stationed at all entrances to the set or location. They prevent anyone from entering or exiting once the lockdown begins. They will often shout ‘Locking up!’ to adjacent areas as a warning.
• Silencing Crew: All conversations stop. Crew members silence their phones and any personal devices. Work that creates noise, such as construction or moving equipment, is halted.
• Controlling the Environment: On location, this can be far more complex. It may involve PAs stopping pedestrian and vehicle traffic that might enter the shot or create noise. Flashing red lights are often used outside a soundstage door to indicate that a take is in progress.

Once the 1st AD is satisfied that the set is completely secure and silent, they will announce ‘Set is locked!’ or ‘Quiet!’, which is the cue for the sound mixer to call ‘Speed!’ and the camera operator to call ‘Speed!’, confirming their equipment is rolling. Only then will the director call ‘Action!’ The lockdown remains in effect until the director calls ‘Cut!’, at which point the 1st AD will release it, and normal activity can resume.
