P3-D65 Explained

P3-D65: Definition

P3-D65 is a variant of the digital cinema color space DCI-P3, but retargeted to the D65 white point used in television and consumer displays. This adaptation enables a wider gamut than Rec.709 while maintaining a consistent white reference.

P3-D65: Specifications

P3-D65 shares the red, green, and blue primaries of DCI-P3 but shifts the white point from DCI’s D63 to the more common D65. It covers approximately 45% of the CIE 1931 chromaticity diagram, compared to 35% for Rec.709.

P3-D65: Usage

P3-D65 is prevalent in digital cinema, theatrical trailers, and high-end consumer devices (smartphones, monitors). Content mastered in P3-D65 retains rich color reproduction on modern displays while remaining compatible with HDR workflows.
