The Colors of the Cinema
P3 DCI, often written as DCI-P3, is a color space that was defined by the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI), a consortium of major motion picture studios. Its purpose was to create a standardized and achievable color palette for digital cinema projectors to ensure color consistency across theaters worldwide. It has since become the benchmark for professional film color grading and mastering for theatrical release.
P3’s Place in the Spectrum
The DCI-P3 color gamut sits in a sweet spot between the older HD standard and the newer UHD standard:
- It is approximately 25% wider than Rec. 709, allowing for richer and more saturated colors, particularly in the green and red spectrums. This is one of the reasons movies watched in a proper cinema often feel more vibrant than their HD Blu-ray counterparts.
- It is smaller than the full Rec. 2020 gamut. While Rec. 2020 is the target for future UHD displays, DCI-P3 represents the color range that is currently achievable by high-end digital cinema projectors.
When a colorist grades a major motion picture, they are working within the DCI-P3 color space, making their creative choices based on how they will look on the big screen.
P3 DCI: Display P3
It’s important to note a variation called Display P3, created by Apple. It uses the same wide color gamut as DCI-P3 but uses a different gamma curve (the same as sRGB/Rec. 709) to be more suitable for computer monitors and mobile device screens. Many modern high-end consumer electronics, like iPhones and iMacs, have ‘P3’ displays, which aim to bring that cinematic color experience to a smaller screen.
