Milk Run

A 'milk run' is a production slang term for a simple, routine errand, typically assigned to a Production Assistant, that involves picking up or dropping off multiple items at various locations.

The Logistical Lifeline of Production

A ‘milk run’ is a classic production errand, a multi-stop journey that is a staple task for any entry-level Production Assistant (PA). The term is borrowed from the daily, routine route of a milkman delivering to multiple houses on a street. In a film production context, it refers to a series of pickups and drop-offs that are essential for keeping the logistical machinery of the shoot running smoothly. While often seen as a menial task, a milk run is a crucial link between the on-set crew, the production office, and the various vendors that support the film.

The Anatomy of a Typical ‘Milk Run’

A Production Coordinator might hand a PA a list of tasks, a credit card, and a set of car keys, sending them on a journey that could include any number of stops:

  • Driving to the set to pick up a hard drive containing the day’s footage.
  • Dropping that hard drive at the post-production facility across town.
  • Going to a prop house to pick up a last-minute item needed for a scene the next day.
  • Stopping at the production office to pick up scripts, paychecks, or signed documents.
  • Delivering those documents back to the location accountant on set.

Like the equally famous coffee run, the milk run serves as a proving ground for a new PA. It tests their ability to navigate efficiently, manage their time, follow a multi-step list of instructions accurately, and communicate their progress back to the production office. A PA who can be trusted to execute a milk run without issue is a PA who has demonstrated the reliability and resourcefulness needed to earn more significant responsibilities. These seemingly mundane errands are the invisible but vital connective tissue that keeps a complex production functioning.
