Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that superimposes computer-generated images, sounds, or information over a user's view of the real world, creating a composite view that is increasingly used in film marketing and experiences.

Enhancing the Real World

Augmented Reality (AR) is an interactive technology that enhances, rather than replaces, a user’s perception of reality. Unlike Virtual Reality (VR), which aims to immerse a user in a completely artificial world, AR overlays digital information onto the real world. This is most commonly experienced through the camera of a smartphone or tablet, where the screen shows the real environment with an added layer of computer-generated imagery.

The goal of AR is to make digital information contextually relevant to a user’s physical surroundings, creating a seamless blend of the physical and digital worlds.

AR in the Film Industry

While still an emerging field, AR is being adopted by the film industry, primarily as a powerful new tool for marketing and fan engagement.

  • Promotional Campaigns: This is the most widespread use of AR today. Social media filters on TikTok and Instagram, and more advanced Lenses on Snapchat, are a form of AR marketing. Studios also create standalone AR apps for major film releases. For example, an app might allow a user to point their phone’s camera at a movie poster, which then comes to life with an animated sequence or a link to buy tickets.
  • Experiential Activations: AR is used to create immersive experiences at physical locations like conventions, theme parks, or promotional events. A visitor at a Star Wars exhibit could use a tablet to see 3D models of starships with informational overlays, or see a virtual stormtrooper marching alongside them.
  • On-Set Production Tools: AR holds significant potential as a tool for filmmakers. A director on a green-screen set could use an AR headset or tablet to see a rough, real-time preview of the CGI characters and environments. This would allow them to frame shots more effectively and give the actors a better sense of the world they are supposed to be interacting with.

As AR technology becomes more accessible, particularly with the development of AR glasses, its applications in both film promotion and production are expected to expand dramatically.
