Magnetic Tape

Magnetic tape is a recording medium used for analog and digital audio and video storage in film production.


Overview

Magnetic tape consists of a plastic backing coated with ferric oxide or chromium dioxide particles, which store analog or digital signals. In film production, it was once the standard for recording audio tracks (on ¼-inch or ⅛-inch reels) and videotape formats for dailies and broadcast masters.

Despite the rise of file‑based workflows, many studios and archives still hold vast collections of magnetic tape. Tape’s robustness and proven longevity—when properly stored—make it a key component of audiovisual heritage.

Formats and Usage

Common audio tape formats include:

  • ¼-inch open reel: Stereo tracks for music and effects.
  • 1-inch Type C videotape: Broadcast standard in the 1970s–1980s.
  • U‑matic: Early video format used for ENG (electronic news gathering).

Recording on magnetic tape involves careful calibration of head azimuth, bias, and equalization to ensure accurate reproduction. Playback machines require regular maintenance to prevent dropouts and tape wear.

Preservation Challenges

Magnetic tape is vulnerable to:

  1. Sticky‑shed syndrome: Binder breakdown causing tape to stick to heads.
  2. Demagnetization: Loss of signal strength over decades.
  3. Physical damage: Stretching, creasing, or breakage.

To preserve tape collections, archivists use controlled environments and periodic baking of tapes to restore playability before digitization.
