Bitrate Ladder

A bitrate ladder is a set of multiple video files of the same content, encoded at different bitrates and resolutions for adaptive streaming.


The Backbone of Modern Streaming

A bitrate ladder, also known as an encoding ladder, is a core component of the technology that powers modern video streaming services like Netflix, YouTube, and Hulu. When a film is prepared for streaming, it is not encoded into just one single file. Instead, it is encoded into a whole series of files—the ‘rungs’ of the ladder—each with a different bitrate (the amount of data used to encode one second of video) and resolution.

Adaptive Bitrate Streaming (ABS)

The purpose of the bitrate ladder is to enable Adaptive Bitrate Streaming (ABS). When you press play, the video player on your device (TV, phone, or computer) assesses your current internet connection speed and screen size. It then selects the most appropriate file from the bitrate ladder.
