A band rate is a fee paid to a crew member for the use of their personal equipment or vehicle on a production, separate from their labor day rate.
A band rate—also commonly known as a kit rental, box rental, or gear rental—is a form of compensation paid to a freelance crew member for the use of their own professional equipment on a film set. This fee is paid in addition to their day rate for labor. It is a formal recognition that the crew member is not only providing their skills but also their personal, often expensive, tools of the trade.
This practice is a cornerstone of the production economy. It allows production companies to avoid the immense capital expense of owning vast inventories of specialized gear for every department. Instead, they essentially rent the necessary equipment directly from the skilled professionals they hire, who are then responsible for the maintenance, insurance, and upkeep of their own tools.
The practice is common across many on-set departments. The amount of the band rate is negotiated during hiring and can range from a nominal fee to a very substantial sum, depending on the value of the equipment provided.
