A New Model for Exclusive Access

Traditionally, access to an exclusive online event is managed via passwords, private links, or paywalls. These methods are vulnerable to sharing, which can dilute the event’s exclusivity and intended audience. Token-gating offers a more secure and verifiable alternative using blockchain technology.

Instead of a password, the ‘key’ is a specific cryptographic token. Access to the content is ‘gated’ and will only open for someone who holds the correct key in their personal crypto wallet.

How It Works

The process is seamless for the user and cryptographically secure on the backend:

1. Connect Wallet: A user arrives at a web page for the screening and is prompted to ‘Connect Wallet’ (e.g., a MetaMask or Coinbase Wallet).
2. Verify Ownership: The user signs a message to prove they control the wallet. The website’s application then checks the public contents of that wallet for the required token. This check is a ‘read-only’ operation; the site cannot access the user’s funds.
3. Grant Access: If the specific required NFT or a sufficient quantity of a certain fungible token is found in the wallet, the user is authenticated and the video player or exclusive content is unlocked. If not, access is denied.

Applications for Filmmakers

Token-gating unlocks a powerful new set of tools for building communities and creating new distribution models:

• True Exclusivity: Filmmakers can host a world premiere screening exclusively for the early supporters who purchased the film’s ‘genesis’ NFT collection.
• Building a Community: A token can act as a membership pass, granting holders access not just to one screening, but to a private Discord server, behind-the-scenes content, and live Q&As with the cast and crew.
• Tiered Access: Different tokens can grant different levels of access. Owning a ‘Gold’ token might grant access to the director’s cut, while a ‘Silver’ token grants access to the theatrical version.
