Conversion Funnel

A conversion funnel is a marketing model illustrating the journey a consumer takes from initial awareness of a product to a desired final action.

From Awareness to Action

The ‘funnel’ is a core concept in marketing that provides a framework for understanding the customer journey. It’s visualized as a wide-mouthed funnel that narrows at the bottom. At the top, a marketer casts a wide net to capture the attention of many potential customers. As these individuals move down through the stages of the funnel, some will lose interest and ‘leak out,’ so the group becomes progressively smaller. The final, narrowest point is the ‘conversion’—the single, desired action the marketer wants the person to take.

The Movie Marketing Funnel

The entire strategy of a film marketing campaign can be mapped onto this funnel model. The goal is to efficiently guide as many people as possible from the top to the bottom.

  1. Awareness (Top of Funnel): This is the broadest stage, where the audience simply becomes aware that a movie exists. This is achieved through high-reach tactics like the first trailer drop, major news articles, posters, and PR stunts. The goal is to make a massive first impression.

  2. Interest & Consideration (Middle of Funnel): A person who is aware of the film now develops an interest. They might watch a second trailer, look at reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, follow the cast on social media, or listen to interviews. In this stage, they are actively considering whether the movie is for them.

  3. Desire & Intent (Middle of Funnel): The consumer’s interest solidifies into a desire to see the film. A stellar final trailer, overwhelmingly positive reviews, or strong word-of-mouth from friends pushes them to the point where they intend to buy a ticket.

  4. Action (Bottom of Funnel): This is the conversion. The person takes the final step and performs the desired action: they buy a ticket for opening weekend, they rent the movie on a streaming service, or they subscribe to the platform where it’s exclusively available.

A studio’s marketing team uses different tactics tailored to each stage of the funnel to ensure they are not just making people aware of their film, but are successfully converting that awareness into actual revenue.
