Render Farm

A render farm is a large computer cluster used to render computer-generated imagery for animated films and visual effects.


The Engine Room of CGI

A render farm is a high-performance computing system that serves as the workhorse for any modern animation or visual effects studio. Rendering is the computationally intensive process of converting a 3D scene—with all its models, textures, lighting, and animation—into a final 2D image or a sequence of images. A single, complex frame of a modern animated movie can take many hours to render on a single powerful computer. To produce a film, which requires 24 of these frames for every second of screen time, is a monumental task.

Distributed Computing in Action

To solve this problem, studios use render farms. A render farm is essentially a network of hundreds or even thousands of individual computers, called render nodes, all working together on the same project. The rendering process is broken down into smaller tasks (usually individual frames) and distributed among the nodes by a render queue manager. Each node works on its assigned frame simultaneously. By harnessing the parallel processing power of the entire farm, a studio can render a whole sequence of a film overnight, a task that would take a single computer months or even years to complete.

Render farms can be physical server rooms located at the studio, or they can be cloud-based services where studios can rent massive amounts of computing power on demand. They are an absolutely essential piece of infrastructure for any production that relies on CGI.
