Kelvin Scale

The Kelvin scale is used in cinematography to measure the color temperature of light, providing a standardized way to white balance cameras and creatively control the color palette of a film.


The Science of Color Temperature

The Kelvin scale (K) measures the ‘color temperature’ of a light source. The concept is based on a theoretical object called a ‘black-body radiator,’ which absorbs all incident light and emits energy whose color changes as its temperature increases. At lower temperatures, it glows red, then orange, yellow, white, and finally blue at very high temperatures. The Kelvin scale assigns a numerical value to these colors.

It’s crucial to understand that in lighting, ‘warmer’ colors have a lower Kelvin value (e.g., the orange glow of a candle), while ‘cooler’ colors have a higher Kelvin value (e.g., the blue of a clear sky). This can be counter-intuitive to the everyday association of blue with ‘cold’ and red with ‘hot.‘

Cinematographers and gaffers have a set of key Kelvin values memorized as reference points. These allow them to match different light sources and control the overall color of a scene.

White Balancing and Creative Application

The primary technical function of the Kelvin scale on set is to achieve a correct white balance. A digital camera’s white balance setting tells the sensor what color of light should be interpreted as neutral white. If a scene is lit with 3200K tungsten lamps, the cinematographer will set the camera’s white balance to 3200K. This neutralizes the orange cast of the lights, so a white piece of paper in the scene will appear perfectly white on camera.

However, color temperature is also one of the most powerful creative tools in filmmaking. By deliberately mismatching the camera’s white balance and the light source, a filmmaker can create a strong emotional tone:

  • Creating Warmth: Setting the camera to a high Kelvin value (e.g., 5600K) in a scene lit by warmer light (e.g., 3200K tungsten) will cause the camera to overcompensate for blue light that isn’t there, resulting in a very warm, orange, nostalgic, or romantic image.
  • Creating Coldness: Setting the camera to a low Kelvin value (e.g., 3200K) in a scene lit by daylight (e.g., 5600K) will cause the camera to expect warm light. Since it’s seeing cool light, the resulting image will be intensely blue and cool, often used to convey sterility, sadness, or futuristic settings.
