Kelvin Color Temperature

Kelvin Color Temperature is an absolute scale used in filmmaking to measure the color of a light source, ranging from warm, orange hues at low Kelvin values to cool, blue hues at high Kelvin values.


The Color of Light

Kelvin Color Temperature is the standardized method used by cinematographers, gaffers, and colorists to measure and communicate the color of light. The scale is based on a scientific principle: the color that a theoretical object called a ‘black-body radiator’ would emit when heated to a specific temperature. As the object heats up, it first glows red, then orange, then yellow, then white, and finally blue. The temperature of the object at each stage, measured in units of Kelvin (K), gives us a corresponding color temperature value.

The Kelvin Scale in Practice

Understanding the Kelvin scale is fundamental to the craft of cinematography and lighting. The human brain has a remarkable ability to ‘white balance’ automatically, but a camera sensor does not; it records the color of light exactly as it is. A cinematographer must know the color temperature of their light sources to make correct technical and creative choices.

Here are some common benchmarks on the Kelvin scale:

Two values are particularly important as they are the industry standards: 3200K for tungsten-based interior lighting and 5600K for HMI lights or natural daylight.

White Balancing and Creative Use

The primary technical use of the Kelvin scale is for white balancing the camera. To produce a neutral image where white objects appear white, the camera’s white balance setting must be matched to the Kelvin temperature of the dominant light source. If you are shooting indoors under tungsten lights, you set your camera to 3200K.

This principle can then be used for creative effect. This is the concept of relative color temperature:

  • If you set your camera to 3200K (expecting tungsten) but film outside in 5600K daylight, the daylight is much ‘cooler’ than the camera expects, so the resulting image will have a strong blue cast.
  • If you set your camera to 5600K (expecting daylight) but film inside under 3200K tungsten light, the light is much ‘warmer’ than the camera expects, so the resulting image will have a strong orange cast.

By intentionally mismatching the camera’s white balance with the color temperature of the scene, cinematographers can create powerful, stylized looks directly in-camera.
