IDT

Definition and Purpose

An Input Device Transform (IDT) is a key component of the ACES workflow, converting raw camera footage with its unique sensor characteristics into the unified ACES scene-referred domain. This ensures consistency across different camera systems and preserves the full dynamic range captured on set.

Technical Function

Each IDT comprises a matrix and transfer-curve adjustments that linearize sensor data, apply white balance, and map the camera gamut to the AP0 reference primaries. Accurate IDTs are developed through spectral response measurements and color-checker calibrations to minimize hue shifts and clipping.

Implementation

IDTs are distributed as part of OCIO Configs or vendor-provided toolkits. During ingest, footage is processed through the IDT, yielding ACES-formatted frames ready for grading, visual effects, and archiving. Proper IDT selection is critical: using an incorrect IDT can introduce color errors that propagate through the pipeline.
