The Fuel of a Film Set

Crafty is the universal on-set slang for the Craft Services department. The person or team running this department is in charge of the craft service table, which is the central hub for snacks, drinks, and caffeine that keep the cast and crew energized and focused during long and demanding shooting days.

It is essential to distinguish Craft Services from Catering. Catering is responsible for providing the main, hot, sit-down meals for the entire production (typically lunch, and sometimes breakfast or dinner). Crafty, on the other hand, is responsible for everything in between. They ensure that coffee is always brewing and that a wide variety of snacks—from healthy options like fruit and nuts to less-healthy morale boosters like candy and chips—are available at all times.

The Importance of a Good Crafty

The quality of a production’s crafty table is often seen as a direct reflection of how much the producers care about their crew’s well-being. A film set operates on the principle that “an army marches on its stomach.” A well-stocked and well-run crafty table is considered a fundamental component of a happy and efficient set. It boosts morale, provides much-needed energy during lulls or long setups, and serves as a social gathering point for the crew.

The craft service person is a beloved figure on set, not only for providing sustenance but also for being an observant and friendly presence. On larger productions, they may also walk around the set with a tray of snacks or a pot of coffee, bringing refreshment directly to crew members who are unable to leave their posts.
