Shining Through

Shining through is an unwanted lighting effect where a light source behind a set wall becomes visible through the material.


An Unintended Revelation

‘Shining through’ is a common and undesirable lighting problem encountered on film sets. It refers to the phenomenon where a powerful lighting instrument, placed behind a piece of scenery, is so bright that its presence becomes visible through the set wall. This breaks the cinematic illusion, as the audience can perceive a ghostly, glowing patch or the distinct shape of a lamp on a surface that should be solid. It reveals the artifice of the set and is considered a technical flaw that must be corrected by the lighting and grip departments.

Causes and Context

This issue most often occurs with set walls known as ‘flats,’ which are typically constructed from a wooden frame covered with a thin sheet of plywood (like lauan) or stretched canvas. While these flats are painted and dressed to look like solid walls on camera, they often lack true opacity. When a high-intensity light, such as an HMI or a powerful Tungsten Fresnel, is placed behind the flat to simulate sunlight coming through a window or to create a backlight, its intensity can be enough to bleed through the thin material of the adjacent wall.

The problem is exacerbated when the area behind the set (the ‘backstage’ area) is brightly lit for crew members to work in. Any stray light can risk shining through a weak point in the scenery.

The Grip’s Solution

Correcting a ‘shining through’ issue is primarily the responsibility of the grip department, working at the direction of the Gaffer and Director of Photography. Several standard techniques are used to solve the problem:

  • Backing: The most common solution is to reinforce the set wall from behind with a more opaque material. This could involve stapling a heavy black fabric or putting up a sheet of sound blanket or ‘space blanket’ to block the light leak.
  • Flagging: A grip will use a ‘flag’—a solid black cloth in a metal frame—on a C-stand to block the specific light beam that is causing the issue. This is a more precise solution if only a small part of the light is problematic.
  • Netting: In some cases, a ‘net’ or ‘scrim’ can be used to reduce the intensity of the light source without changing its quality or position, which may be enough to prevent it from shining through.
  • Repositioning: As a last resort, the lighting instrument itself may be moved further away from the wall to diffuse its intensity, though this can alter the desired lighting effect.
