Shotgun Microphone

A shotgun microphone is a highly directional microphone designed to capture clear sound from a specific source while rejecting ambient noise from the sides and rear.


Precision Sound Capture

The shotgun microphone is arguably the most important tool for capturing dialogue in film and television production. Its name comes from its physical resemblance to the barrel of a shotgun, but also aptly describes its function: it ‘aims’ at a sound source with a high degree of precision. This directionality is defined by its ‘pickup pattern’. While a basic microphone might be omnidirectional (picking up sound equally from all directions), a shotgun mic has what is known as a lobar or supercardioid pickup pattern. This means it is extremely sensitive to sound coming from directly in front of it, but actively rejects sound coming from the sides and, to a lesser extent, the rear.

This characteristic is precisely why it is so valuable for filmmaking. On a noisy set or location, a shotgun mic allows the boom operator to isolate an actor’s dialogue from the surrounding ambient noise, resulting in a clean and intelligible recording.

The Science of the Interference Tube

The secret to a shotgun microphone’s directionality lies in its physical design, specifically its ‘interference tube’. This is the long, slotted barrel that gives the mic its distinctive look. The principle behind it is a clever application of physics called phase cancellation.

  • On-Axis Sound: Sound waves originating directly in front of the microphone travel straight down the length of the tube to the microphone capsule at the end. They arrive as a single, coherent signal.
  • Off-Axis Sound: Sound waves from the side, however, enter the microphone through the series of slots along the tube’s length. A sound wave entering a slot near the front of the tube has a longer path to travel to the capsule than a wave entering a slot near the back. Because of these different path lengths, the sound waves arrive at the capsule at slightly different times—they are ‘out of phase’ with each other.

When these out-of-phase sound waves combine, they cancel each other out, dramatically reducing their volume. The longer the interference tube, the more effective it is at rejecting off-axis sound, which is why shotgun mics used for capturing distant sounds are often very long.

Use in Film Production

The primary role of the shotgun microphone is on the end of a boompole, wielded by a boom operator. This technique is the gold standard for recording dialogue for several reasons:

  • Natural Sound: By positioning the mic above and slightly in front of the actors (just out of the camera’s frame), it captures a sound that is natural and matches the perspective of the scene. It picks up not just the voice, but the way the voice resonates in the space, which is difficult to replicate with a body-worn lavalier mic.
  • Flexibility: A skilled boom operator can subtly follow the dialogue in a conversation, ‘cueing’ the mic back and forth between speakers to maintain optimal sound quality for each actor.
  • Plant Mics: When booming is not possible (for example, in a very wide shot where the boompole would be in frame), a shotgun mic can be hidden on the set. It might be taped to a piece of furniture or rigged in the ceiling, ‘planted’ in a fixed position and aimed at the area where the dialogue will occur.

Common Misconceptions

A frequent misunderstanding is that shotgun mics ‘zoom in’ on sound in the same way a telephoto camera lens zooms in on an image. This is incorrect. A shotgun mic does not amplify distant sounds. Instead, it achieves the perception of closeness by rejecting the ambient sound around the subject. By eliminating the extraneous noise from the sides, the desired on-axis sound becomes far more prominent and clear in the recording, making it seem closer.
