In-Camera VFX (ICVFX) is a virtual production technique that uses real-time 3D environments displayed on LED walls as a direct replacement for greenscreen.

In-Camera VFX, often shortened to ICVFX, is a revolutionary approach to filmmaking that blends physical and digital worlds seamlessly on set. The technique involves surrounding a physical set and actors with massive, high-resolution LED screens (often called an ‘LED Volume’). These screens display a photorealistic 3D background created in a real-time game engine like Unreal Engine. The key to the illusion is that the 3D environment is dynamically tracked to the camera’s perspective.

How It Works

A camera tracking system follows the precise movement of the physical film camera. This data is fed into the game engine, which then renders the 3D background from that exact point of view in real-time. This creates a perfect motion parallax effect, meaning the background moves in perspective correctly relative to the camera’s position. This makes the 2D screen appear as a true 3D space to the camera. The benefits are immense:

  • Final-Pixel Shots: A significant portion of the visual effects are captured ‘in-camera,’ reducing the need for extensive greenscreen compositing in post-production.
  • Realistic Lighting: The LED walls emit real, interactive light onto the actors and physical sets, creating naturalistic and complex lighting and reflections that are incredibly difficult to replicate with greenscreen.
  • Actor Immersion: Actors can see and react to the virtual world around them, leading to more grounded and believable performances.
