In-Camera Effect

Any visual effect achieved directly during principal photography without post production.


Overview

In-camera effects are created on set—during the actual shoot—rather than added in post-production. Techniques include forced perspective, multiple exposures, prism filters, and camera-mounted rigs that alter exposure or lens characteristics. By capturing the illusion in a single pass, filmmakers can maintain organic lighting interactions and reduce reliance on optical or digital compositing.

Historical Development

From Georges Méliès’s stop-motion tricks in A Trip to the Moon (1902) to Alfred Hitchcock’s innovative use of miniatures and glass matte shots in Vertigo (1958), in-camera effects have been central to cinema’s evolution. The 1970s extension of in-camera work included slit-scan photography for psychedelic sequences in 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and practical prefabricated rigs for stunt-driven sequences.
