Vectorscope

A Vectorscope is a circular video scope that displays the color information of an image, showing the hue and saturation of every pixel on a circular graph.


The Color Compass

If the Waveform Monitor is the tool for measuring ‘how bright’ an image is, the Vectorscope is its counterpart for measuring ‘how colorful’ it is. The vectorscope ignores all brightness information and provides a purely objective look at the chrominance (hue and saturation) of the image. It plots the color of every pixel onto a circular grid, which functions like a top-down view of a color wheel. For a colorist, it is an essential tool for judging color balance, controlling saturation, and, most importantly, achieving consistent and accurate skin tones.

How to Read a Vectorscope

The circular graph of a vectorscope, called a graticule, is easy to interpret once you understand its two axes:

  • Hue (The Angle): The angle of any point relative to the center of the circle represents its hue. The scope has marked targets for the six primary and secondary colors: Red (R), Magenta (Mg), Blue (B), Cyan (Cy), Green (G), and Yellow (Yl). A cluster of pixels that are pure red will create a ‘trace’ that points directly at the ‘R’ target.
  • Saturation (The Distance): The distance of the trace from the dead center of the circle represents its saturation. The center point represents zero saturation (black, white, or gray). The further the trace extends from the center towards the edge, the more intense and saturated that color is.

Primary Uses in Color Grading

  1. Assessing Color Cast: In a perfectly balanced, neutral image, the entire trace of the vectorscope will be clustered in a small blob right at the center. If an image has an overall color cast, the entire blob will be pulled off-center in the direction of that color. For example, in a shot with a heavy green tint, the trace will be skewed towards the ‘G’ target. The colorist’s job is to use the primary controls to move the trace back to the center to achieve neutrality.
  2. Controlling Saturation: The vectorscope provides a clear, objective measure of color intensity. A colorist can increase the overall saturation and watch the trace expand outwards from the center. Most broadcast standards have legal limits for saturation, and the vectorscope has markings to show these limits. The colorist must ensure no part of the trace extends beyond these boundaries to avoid creating an illegal signal.
  3. Matching Skin Tones (The Flesh Line): This is arguably the most critical use of the vectorscope. It has been observed that the hue of human skin, regardless of ethnicity or skin tone, falls on a very specific axis on the vectorscope. This axis, running roughly between the Yellow and Red targets, is marked on most scopes and is known as the ‘Flesh Line’ or ‘Skin Tone Line.’ A colorist can isolate an actor’s face and check the vectorscope to see if the resulting trace falls neatly on this line. This allows them to create perfectly consistent and natural-looking skin tones from shot to shot, even if the lighting changed during filming. It is the colorist’s secret weapon for beautiful portraiture.
