Duv

Duv is a precise color science metric that measures the green or magenta tint of a light source, working in tandem with the Kelvin scale to define a light's true color.


Beyond Kelvin: The Green–Magenta Axis

The Kelvin scale is a one-dimensional measurement that describes the color of light along the orange-to-blue axis. This works perfectly for ideal light sources like the sun or a tungsten filament, which are close approximations of a theoretical ‘black-body radiator.’ However, many modern light sources—especially LEDs, fluorescents, and even HMIs—are not perfect black-body radiators. Their light often deviates from the pure orange-blue curve, exhibiting a slight tint on a perpendicular axis: the green–magenta axis.

Duv (an abbreviation for Delta u, v’) is the metric used to quantify this deviation. It provides the crucial second dimension needed to accurately describe the color of a light source. While Kelvin tells you if the light is warm or cool, Duv tells you if it’s tinted green or magenta.

Understanding the Measurement

Duv is measured as a value relative to the pure black-body curve on a chromaticity diagram. The curve itself represents a Duv of zero.

  • A Duv of 0 means the light source is perfectly neutral, with no green or magenta tint. It falls directly on the black-body locus.
  • A positive Duv (e.g., +0.004) indicates a shift towards green. This is a common issue with cheaper LED fixtures and older fluorescent lights.
  • A negative Duv (e.g., -0.004) indicates a shift towards magenta.

The human eye is extremely sensitive to these shifts, particularly in skin tones. A slight green spike in a light can make an actor look sickly and unnatural.

Practical Importance in Cinematography

For a cinematographer, managing Duv is just as important as managing Kelvin temperature. On a professional film set, this comes into play in several critical ways:

  1. Matching Different Light Sources: When lighting a scene with multiple types of lights (e.g., a large HMI and a smaller LED panel), the gaffer must match them on both axes. If the HMI has a Duv of +0.003 (slightly green) and the LED has a Duv of -0.002 (slightly magenta), they will never look right together, even if their Kelvin temperature is identical. This is corrected by adding colored gels to the lights—typically Minusgreen (magenta) gel to the HMI or Plusgreen (green) gel to the LED—to neutralize the tint and make their Duv values match.
  2. Camera White Balance: High-end cinema cameras have a ‘Tint’ or ‘White Balance Shift’ control that allows the operator to dial in a green or magenta correction to compensate for any overall tint in the ambient light.
  3. Quality Control: When purchasing or renting LED lights, the Duv value is a key indicator of quality. Professional-grade cinema LEDs are engineered to have a Duv as close to zero as possible across their entire dimming range.
