The Theatrical Standard for a Modern Master Format

IMF App #5, officially known as “Cinema Mezzanine,” is a specific application and constraint set within the Interoperable Master Format (IMF) standard. It defines the technical requirements for creating the most pristine, high-quality master packages, specifically those intended for creating Digital Cinema Packages (DCPs) for theatrical exhibition and for long-term archival.

A Quick Primer on IMF

IMF is a modern, file-based mastering format designed to solve the problem of versioning in global distribution. Instead of creating dozens of separate, flattened video files for different languages, territories, and platforms, IMF allows a post-production house to create a single, component-based master package. This package contains one master video track, and separate tracks for all audio languages and subtitle files. Different versions (e.g., the German theatrical version, the French airline version) are then created using simple, text-based Composition Playlists (CPLs) that just point to the required components. This saves enormous amounts of time, storage, and QC work.

What Makes App #5 Special?

IMF has several “applications” tailored for different uses (e.g., App #2 for broadcast and streaming). App #5 is designed for the very top of the pyramid—the master file from which all other versions should be derived. Its key technical requirement is the use of the lossless JPEG 2000 video codec. This is significant because it’s the exact same codec mandated for theatrical DCPs. Using App #5 ensures that the quality of the IMF master is identical to the quality of the version that will be shown in cinemas, making it a true “digital negative” and the ideal source for creating all other deliverables.
