Clapper Loader
The assistant responsible for slate operation and film/media loading.
Overview
The clapper loader, often the second assistant camera (2nd AC), manages the slate (clapperboard) to mark take numbers and sync sound with picture. They also load and unload film magazines or digital media, log metadata, and maintain camera reports.
On-Set Duties
Before each take, the loader writes scene and take information on the slate, calls “rolling,” and snaps the clapper. They then crosscheck camera and sound rolls for synchronization. Between takes, they handle media swaps, secure footage, and label magazines to prevent mix‑ups.
Technical and Organizational Skills
Clapper loaders must be meticulous, organized, and familiar with camera formats and codecs. They manage backups of digital files, oversee data wrangling, and update shot logs for editorial. Accuracy prevents costly reshoots and ensures post workflows remain efficient.
Role in Production Workflow
As a bridge between camera and editorial, the clapper loader’s precision underpins the integrity of recorded material. Their detailed reports and labeled media are foundational to smooth dailies screenings and final assembly of the film.
