Premium auditorium format featuring large curved screens and immersive audio tailored to local venues.
SphereX is a proprietary premium large-format (PLF) offering from exhibitor CJ CGV. It combines an oversized curved screen, upgraded projection or LED display, and venue-specific immersive audio. The goal is heightened scale, consistent brightness, and enveloping sound without licensing into third-party global PLF brands.
Curvature increases peripheral engagement and can reduce off-axis falloff; however, it demands careful geometric correction to avoid stretching artifacts on the edges. Seating is optimized for a wide sweet spot, while acoustic treatments focus on tight bass control and clear dialog at high SPLs. Projection systems are typically laser-based for sustained luminance; some sites experiment with direct-view technologies where feasible.
Standard DCPs play normally, but pre-show branding and trailers may be authored to the format’s geometry and sound bed. Filmmakers are not required to supply special mixes; however, QC in at least one SphereX house is recommended for tentpoles to validate subtitle placement, edge warping, and low-frequency management on the large baffle.
SphereX competes with other PLFs by emphasizing screen size and seat comfort over bespoke remastering. Audience response hinges on consistent presentation and premium amenities (sightlines, recliners, concessions) as much as image specs. For distributors, the format offers a premium ticket without additional deliverable costs.
