Run-Time Encryption

Run-time encryption is a core DRM security method that only decrypts content in a device's memory at the exact moment it's needed, preventing piracy.


Security in the Moment of Execution

Run-time encryption is a sophisticated and fundamental security practice used in Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems to protect high-value content like feature films from piracy. The core principle of run-time encryption is that the content file is never stored in a decrypted state on a user’s hard drive. Instead, the data is only decrypted in the computer’s volatile memory (RAM) for the briefest possible moment—the “run-time”— just before it is displayed on screen.

How It Protects Content

Here’s a simplified breakdown of the process when a user presses play on a streaming service:

  1. The video file on the server is securely encrypted. It remains encrypted during its transmission to the user’s device and while it is stored in the device’s temporary cache.
  2. A secure, licensed media player on the device requests the decryption keys from a license server.
  3. The player loads a small, encrypted chunk of the video file into the computer’s RAM.
  4. It decrypts this chunk in memory, sends the decrypted data directly to the secure video pathway of the graphics card for display, and then immediately purges the decrypted data from RAM.

This entire process happens continuously, chunk by chunk, throughout playback. Because a complete, decrypted version of the film never exists as a file on the user’s system, it becomes exceptionally difficult for pirates to intercept and save a perfect digital copy. This “just-in-time” decryption method is a cornerstone of the DRM technologies used by all major streaming platforms, such as Google Widevine, Apple FairPlay, and Microsoft PlayReady, to protect film and television content after it has been delivered to the end-user.
