Plate Playback Server

A plate playback server is a high-performance computer system used on set to play back pre-recorded background footage, known as plates, onto LED screens for virtual production.


Delivering the Background

In virtual production, there are two primary methods for displaying content on an LED volume. One is using a real-time game engine like Unreal Engine, which offers interactive 3D environments. The other, often used for driving scenes and other specific scenarios, is playing back pre-recorded video footage, known as ‘plates.’ A plate playback server is the specialized and robust piece of hardware designed for this exact task. It is a media server engineered to store, manage, and play back extremely high-resolution video files across a large array of LED panels with perfect synchronization and reliability.

Real-Time Engine vs. Plate Playback

The choice between a real-time engine and plate playback depends on the creative needs of the shot:

Technical Requirements

A standard computer is not capable of handling the demands of on-set plate playback. These specialized servers are built for performance and reliability:

  • High-Bandwidth Playback: They must be able to play back massive video files, often at resolutions of 8K or higher and in uncompressed or lightly compressed formats, without dropping a single frame.
  • Multi-Output Synchronization: The server needs to send perfectly synchronized video signals to the numerous processors that drive the LED wall. This is often achieved using a technology called ‘genlock’ to ensure every component is running on the same clock signal.
  • Robustness: They are designed for the rigors of a film set, offering a level of stability and reliability that is not found in off-the-shelf systems.
