Written in the active present tense, it describes every significant movement, from a subtle, nervous twitch of the fingers to a full-blown explosive car chase. This is where the core principle of ‘show, don’t tell’ is put into practice. The writer’s job is not to tell us what a character is feeling, but to show us through their actions.
Clarity and conciseness are paramount. Complex sequences need to be broken down into a series of clear, sequential steps that are easy for the reader to visualize. The writing should be direct and impactful, favoring strong, active verbs over adverbs and adjectives. The goal is to create a blueprint for the director and actors, describing the essential physical story of the scene in a way that is both engaging to read and practical to film.

Choreographing Action Sequences: For a fight or chase scene, the action description becomes a piece of technical writing. The writer breaks the sequence down into a clear, logical progression of beats, like a dance choreography. This provides the stunt team and director with a solid foundation to build upon.
John ducks under a wild swing, plants his foot, and drives his elbow into the assailant's ribs. The man grunts, stumbling back. John presses the advantage, moving in for another strike.
