The Source of the Image
For any motion picture shot on celluloid, the Original Camera Negative, or OCN, is the single most important and irreplaceable physical asset of the entire production. It is the actual film that ran through the camera gate and was exposed to light during the filming of every take. As the first-generation source, it holds the highest possible quality of the image—the finest grain, the sharpest detail, and the greatest range of light and shadow (dynamic range).
Its Role in the Workflow
The OCN has a reversed image (colors and light values are inverted) and is far too valuable to be used for everyday tasks like editing. Instead, the workflow is designed to protect it at all costs:
- Processing: After a day of shooting, the OCN is sent to a film laboratory to be developed.
- Dailies/Workprint: A positive copy, called a workprint or ‘dailies,’ is made from the OCN. This copy is what the editor uses to physically cut and splice together the film.
- Negative Cutting: Once the edit is ‘locked,’ a specialized negative cutter uses the editor’s workprint as a guide to conform, or cut and splice, the precious OCN to match the final edit perfectly.
- Printing: All subsequent prints of the film, including the answer print and the final release prints for theaters, are then struck from this conformed OCN.
Today, the first step after developing the OCN is typically to scan it at a high resolution to create a digital master, with the physical negative then being carefully stored in a climate-controlled vault.
