ALE File

Overview

An ALE (Avid Log Exchange) File is a human‑readable, tab‑delimited text format that conveys clip metadata—such as timecode, reel names, slate information, and user comments—between logging tools and Avid Media Composer. By exporting an ALE from a logging application or conform list, editors can import bins pre‑organized with accurate clip names and metadata.

Structure and Syntax

An ALE file begins with a header section describing column definitions, followed by a data section with one row per clip. Sample structure:

Fields are customizable, and users often add columns for angle, scene, take, or custom notes.

Workflow Integration

1. Logging: Assistant editors log footage in tools like Prelude or Adobe Logging panels, tagging relevant metadata.
2. Export: The logger exports an ALE, preserving all metadata fields.
3. Import: In Avid, the editor chooses “Import ALE,” mapping columns to bin fields, instantly creating a structured bin with subclips and comments.

Benefits and Limitations

• Benefits: Rapid bin creation; consistent clip naming; easy audit of logging decisions.
• Limitations: Limited to Avid ecosystems; tab‑delimited quirks can break on special characters; no support for embedded media references.
