Physical Causes and Types

Lens flare occurs when strong light—like the sun or studio lamps—bounces between lens elements and sensor or film plane, producing streaks, rings or haze. Variations include ghosting (distinct shapes reflecting aperture blades) and veiling flare (overall contrast reduction). The severity depends on lens coatings, element count and optical design.

Tech companies introduced multi-layer anti-reflective coatings in the 1970s to minimize flare. Yet modern filmmakers sometimes disable these coatings or use vintage optics to reintroduce controlled flare for texture and atmosphere.

Creative Use and Cultural Impact

Lens flare became a hallmark of 1970s sci-fi and action films—George Lucas’s Star Wars (1977) popularized cinematic flare as part of its visual identity. Directors like JJ Abrams embrace “flare” as a signature, using it to evoke nostalgia and pop-culture energy. Conversely, some auteurs avoid flare entirely to maintain stark realism.

In music videos and commercials, intentional flares accentuate sunlit scenes or simulate dreamlike states. Whether avoided or celebrated, lens flare continues to spark debates about artifice and authenticity in modern cinematography.
