The Industry’s Stamp of Sustainability

Albert Certification is the definitive ‘green’ credential for the screen industries, particularly in the UK and Europe. It is a program run by Albert, a BAFTA-governed environmental organization, that provides a framework and a set of standards for sustainable production. Seeing the Albert logo in a film or show’s end credits is a clear, third-party-verified statement that the production has taken its environmental responsibilities seriously.

The Path to Certification

To earn the certification, a production must complete a multi-step process, guided by their Green Producer or sustainability team:

  1. Create a Carbon Action Plan: Before production begins, the team must outline the specific, practical steps they will take to reduce their environmental impact. This includes setting targets for waste diversion, energy use, and travel.
  2. Use the Carbon Calculator: Throughout the entire production, the team must meticulously track its carbon footprint by inputting data on fuel, flights, materials, and more into the official Albert carbon calculator.
  3. Implement Sustainable Practices: The production must demonstrate that it has followed through on its action plan by eliminating single-use plastics, using renewable energy sources where possible, and promoting a culture of sustainability on set.
  4. Answer the Questionnaire: At the end of production, the team submits its final carbon footprint data and answers a detailed questionnaire that scores their efforts across various areas of production.

Due to the influence of major broadcasters like the BBC, ITV, and Sky, as well as Netflix UK, achieving Albert Certification has become a mandatory requirement for a huge number of productions. This has effectively made sustainable production practices the industry standard in the UK and is a model being adopted worldwide.
