The Digital Master Negative
ACES AP0, officially designated as ACES2065-1, is the foundational color space of the Academy Color Encoding System (ACES). It is designed to be the ultimate, all-encompassing ‘master’ color space for any cinematic project. Its key characteristics are:
- Ultra-Wide Gamut: AP0 is enormous. Its gamut of colors is so vast that it includes the entire spectrum of colors the human eye can see (as defined by the CIE 1931 standard), and even colors outside of it. This ensures that any color captured by any current or future digital camera can be faithfully represented without being ‘clipped’ or lost.
- Scene-Referred Linear: It stores light information in a linear fashion, directly corresponding to the light and color of the original scene in front of the camera. This ‘scene-referred’ data is pure, objective information about the light, free from any display-specific calibrations (like a monitor or projector).
Think of AP0 as the master digital negative for an entire production. All footage, regardless of the camera it was shot on (ARRI, RED, Sony, etc.), is converted into this universal format for archival and interchange between different facilities, like VFX houses. Because of its massive size and computational demands, it is not the space artists work in directly; that role is reserved for ACES AP1.
