ODT

An Output Device Transform that maps scene-referred imagery to a specific display-referred color space.

ODT

Definition and Role

An Output Device Transform (ODT) converts ACES scene-referred imagery into the color space and gamma curve of a target display—such as Rec.709 SDR, DCI-P3, or HDR formats (PQ, HLG). It applies gamut mapping, tone mapping, and transfer-curve encoding.

Technical Details

ODTs incorporate a combination of 3×3 matrix transforms, non-linear tone curves, and 1D/3D LUTs. They compress the high dynamic range of ACES into the smaller range of consumer displays while preserving perceptual contrast and color accuracy. Each ODT is tuned to its display’s primaries, white point, and luminance limits.

Workflow Integration

After creative work in ACEScg, images pass through the chosen ODT for preview, QC, and final delivery. Facilities maintain separate ODTs for SDR and HDR deliverables, ensuring that content looks correct on cinema screens, broadcast monitors, and streaming platforms.
