The Brothers Rico 1957

Eddie Rico, portrayed by Richard Conte, is a contented man living in Bayshore, Florida, where he owns a thriving laundry business. Behind his seemingly peaceful life, however, lurks a shadow of his past. Many years earlier, Eddie was the accountant for a powerful crime syndicate, a role he has since abandoned in favor of a lawful existence. His current dreams center around building a future with his wife, Dianne Foster, as they hope to adopt a child and create a family.

The tranquility of Eddie’s life begins to unravel when he receives a phone call from Phil, a mob operative, demanding that Eddie provide employment for a hitman named Wesson, played by William Phipps, and offer him shelter to lay low. This unsettling development heightens Alice’s, Eddie’s wife, concerns that his connection to the criminal underworld might drag him back into a life of violence and crime. Eddie, trying to reassure her, remains calm but soon receives a distressing letter from his mother, revealing that his brothers Johnny, played by James Darren, and Gino, played by Paul Picerni, who are still involved in the mob, have mysteriously disappeared.

The situation intensifies when Eddie, while driving, notices that the car following him is driven by his brother Gino. They pull over together, and Gino, battered and desperate, begs Eddie to help him escape the country. Gino confesses that he was the gunman involved in a gang killing, and reveals that Johnny was his chauffeur. Gino fears that the syndicate now plans to eliminate him, especially since they’ve ordered him to travel to St. Louis. Despite Gino’s plea, Eddie, trusting in Sid Kubik, the boss of the syndicate who he regards as a father figure, dismisses his worries and advises him to leave for St. Louis with some money, believing that the organization’s intentions are not as black as Gino perceives.

Soon after, Eddie receives a summons from Sid Kubik to meet in Miami, where he is apprised of the situation with Johnny. Kubik, played by Larry Gates, expresses his concern over Johnny’s whereabouts, especially because Johnny’s brother Peter Malaks, played by Lamont Johnson, is speaking out to prosecutors against the syndicate, risking Johnny’s safety. Although Eddie insists Johnny wouldn’t turn against the organization, Kubik suggests that unless Johnny leaves the country, his life will be in peril. The boss’s words reveal that the syndicate is considering deadly action against Johnny, and Gino, battered and beaten, is seen helplessly in a nearby room, showing the sinister side of these organized crimes.

Eddie ventures to New York City, attempting to locate Johnny through Peter Malaks and his mother, portrayed by Argentina Brunetti, who is distrustful of everyone, especially after Gino’s warnings. His mother, who once risked her life to protect Kubik, now refuses to trust him and refuses to reveal Johnny’s exact location, only indicating that Johnny last wrote from El Camino, California. Eddie eventually arrives there and finds Johnny, now a father to a baby boy, and his pregnant wife Norah, played by Kathryn Grant, hiding on a farm. Johnny explains he left the syndicate because he wants his son to grow up without crime and corruption. Norah, overwhelmed and pregnant, collapses, desperate for medical help.

Eddie’s investigation draws the attention of local crime boss Mike Lamotta, played by Harry Bellaver, who appears in his hotel room. It becomes clear that Sid Kubik has used Eddie to locate Johnny, with the sinister plan to have him killed. Lamotta’s men order Johnny to meet them, and in a twist of moral courage, Eddie urges Johnny to contact the police. Yet, Johnny, joyful about becoming a father, chooses to leave, but is tragically murdered outside the house by the mobsters, as the organization’s ruthless nature is revealed.

In the aftermath, Eddie learns that his brother Gino also tried to escape and was killed, solidifying the dangerous reality he’s entangled in. During a stop in Phoenix, Eddie seizes an opportunity, knocking out Gonzales, Lamotta’s assistant, takes his pistol, and makes a frantic plea to Alice to meet him secretly in New York. His escape leads him to avoid the mafia’s reach, and he contacts Peter Malaks, informing him of Johnny and Gino’s deaths. Malaks, now convinced of Eddie’s sincerity, agrees to meet him to provide safety and support for his sister and their new nephew.

Eddie retrieves a substantial amount of money from a bank vault, preparing to secure their safety. He distributes the funds in envelopes to Peter Malaks, Alice, and his mother. As Alice, overwhelmed, is sent to the airport with Malaks, Eddie confronts Sid Kubik face-to-face. When Kubik holds him at gunpoint, Eddie, quick-thinking with a gun he kept, shoots and kills both Kubik and his accomplice, though he is wounded in the process.

The story culminates with headlines proclaiming that Eddie has testified against the syndicate, leading to its takedown, and in a final scene, Eddie and Alice drive together to a children’s home, where they hope to finalize the adoption of their child. This ending embodies a difficult but hopeful resolution, illustrating Eddie’s fight against organized crime and his pursuit of a peaceful family life, free from violence and intimidation.
