Gates commenced with a spectacular career in 1952, taking on integral roles in prominent movies like Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), and In the Heat of the Night (1967). He also appeared in esteemed Broadway productions, including The Taming of The Shrew (1950), The Teahouse of the August Moon (1953), and First Monday in October (1978).
