New Orleans newspaper columnist Gabe Jordan, John McIntire nearing retirement, narrates the life of Socks Barbarossa, Ralph Meeker, a boxer whose raw talent is matched by a troubled past and a stubborn, enduring drive.

On the night Socks is about to contend for the championship, he abruptly flees the ring and the arena, leaving everyone puzzled—from his manager Peppi Donato, Gilbert Roland to his love Angie Evans, Leslie Caron, and even her blind father, the Judge, Kurt Kasznar.

The taunt from his opponent afterward in the empty arena fuels Socks’s fury, and he reciprocates with a decisive blow that underscores both his power and a history of nerves that never fully leave him.

Peppi Donato offers Socks a job at a nightclub he plans to buy, where Angie has been working as a dancer, a move that promises both opportunity and temptation for the couple. Meanwhile, Socks also holds the contract of another fighter, Newsboy Addams, but raffles it off, a decision that sets off a chain of events beyond the ring.

“Pig” Nichols, a gangster, Dan Seymour wins the contract, and soon Socks and the fighter he prized are drafted into the war effort, pulling them away from the boxing world and into a different kind of battle.

When Socks finally returns, the Judge’s hostility toward him remains stubborn, even though Socks comes back as a decorated war hero. A surgeon, Dr. Ardley, Larry Gates, explains that there’s a 50-50 chance of correcting the Judge’s blindness, and it emerges that Dr. Ardley and Socks share a Milwaukee past from their younger days. Socks also carries scars—visible and hidden—from a long-ago ring incident that can trigger panic during a fight, a detail that adds depth to his present struggle.

Angie steps forward to vouch for Socks with the Judge, revealing that she herself had been working in a club to support them, a fact that softens the old man’s skepticism. With the operation considered, the Judge ultimately gives his approval, and Socks returns to the ring with renewed confidence and skill.

In the end, the club becomes a small stage for celebration as Socks’s comeback story unfolds—the kind of night that Gabe, the newspaperman, would turn into a new chapter for readers to remember.
