Simone Signoret (born Simone Henriette Charlotte Kaminker on 25 March 1921 in Wiesbaden, Germany) was a towering figure of French cinema whose career spanned more than four decades. Raised in an intellectually vibrant Parisian household, she was the eldest of three children of Georgette Signoret, a French Catholic, and André Kaminker, a French‑born officer of Polish‑Jewish and Hungarian‑Jewish descent. After finishing secondary school during the Nazi occupation, she supported her family by working as a typist for a collaborationist newspaper, while secretly nurturing a passion for the stage. Encouraged by friends such as Daniel Gélin, she adopted her mother’s maiden name to conceal her Jewish heritage and made her screen debut in 1942, quickly becoming the principal breadwinner for her mother and brothers. Her early roles often cast her as a sensual prostitute, but she turned type‑casting into artistic triumphs, delivering a breakthrough performance in Jacques Becker’s Casque d’or (1951) and earning critical acclaim for La Ronde (1950).
