Bernard Blier was born on 11 January 1916 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where his father, a researcher at the Pasteur Institute, was temporarily stationed. The son of Suzanne (Bargy) and Louis Blier, he spent his early years in a multicultural environment before moving to France, where he would become one of the most respected character actors of his generation. His distinctive rotund features and premature baldness quickly typecast him in roles of the beleaguered husband, but Blier soon demonstrated an extraordinary range, effortlessly shifting between comedy and drama, which made him a staple in French cinema for over five decades. Beginning his career in 1937, he amassed a filmography of 175 titles, collaborating with celebrated directors and appearing alongside numerous prominent actors, thereby solidifying his reputation as a versatile talent.
