In 1866, Alexei Ivanovitch, a young Muscovite, arrives in Baden‑Baden, Austria’s gambling hub, to care for General Zagorianski’s children. He learns the General, a compulsive gambler, is funded by Marquis de Grieux, who aims to marry the General’s sister Pauline for an inheritance from Aunt Antonina. Disillusioned by the money‑driven world and in love with Pauline, Alexei tries to protect her, but after she rejects him he falls into the casino’s lure.
