He began his screen work in the early sound era, quickly becoming a recognizable character actor known for his versatile performances in both comedies and dramas. Carette's early roles, such as Lepape in American Love (1931) and Michel in Seul (1932), showcased his natural comedic timing, while later parts like Cartier the actor in Jean Renoir’s masterpiece The Grand Illusion (1937) demonstrated his ability to blend subtlety with depth. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, he collaborated with many of France’s leading directors, appearing in classics such as The Rules of the Game (1939) where he played Marceau the poacher, and La Bête Humaine (1938) as Pecqueux, contributing to the golden age of French cinema. His extensive filmography includes notable titles like The Red Inn (1951), Holiday for Henrietta (1952), and Crime and Punishment (1956), reflecting a career that never waned in relevance or popularity.
