What's After the Movie
Bernard Blier was born on 11 January 1916 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where his father, a researcher at the Pasteur Institute, was temporarily stationed. The son of Suzanne (Bargy) and Louis Blier, he spent his early years in a multicultural environment before moving to France, where he would become one of the most respected character actors of his generation. His distinctive rotund features and premature baldness quickly typecast him in roles of the beleaguered husband, but Blier soon demonstrated an extraordinary range, effortlessly shifting between comedy and drama, which made him a staple in French cinema for over five decades. Beginning his career in 1937, he amassed a filmography of 175 titles, collaborating with celebrated directors and appearing alongside numerous prominent actors, thereby solidifying his reputation as a versatile talent. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, he was a frequent presence in both French and Italian productions, and his late‑career work often featured him in his son Bertrand Blier’s films, most famously in the cult classic Buffet froid (1979). In recognition of his contributions, he received an Honorary César in 1989, just twenty‑four days before his death on 29 March 1989 in Saint‑Cloud, France, a poignant reminder of his enduring impact on the industry. Beyond his professional achievements, Blier’s personal life was marked by his marriage to Gisèle Brunet in 1938, with whom he fathered two children, including the noted director Bertrand Blier, who has paid tribute to his father both on screen and in literature. His legacy endures through the countless roles he inhabited, the awards he earned, and the influence he exerted on subsequent generations of actors and filmmakers.
