Thérèse, Simone Signoret, an orphan raised by her widowed aunt in a dingy Lyon backstreet shop, marries her sickly first cousin, Camille [Jacques Duby]. Into their claustrophobic life arrives Laurent, [Raf Vallone], a lively Italian truck driver who is immediately drawn to Thérèse, yet she remains loyal to both Camille and to Madame Raquin [Sylvie], the formidable aunt who rules their household.

When the affair becomes known, Camille and his mother, Mme Noblet [Madeleine Barbulée], plot to remove Thérèse from their lives. They decide to take her to Paris and hand her over to another aunt, hoping to sever the bond that has unsettled the family’s balance. Laurent’s temper flares as the plan unfolds, and the couple’s fragile arrangement begins to crack.

Laurent, in a burst of anger, climbs onto the speeding train and, in the darkness, pushes Camille out. He then slips away at the next stop, leaving Thérèse to face the consequences. Thérèse tells the police that she was asleep in her compartment the whole time, trying to shield herself from the mounting suspicion and to preserve what remains of her fragile world. The shock of Camille’s death also hits his mother hard, leaving her speechless and dependent on the mercy of others as Thérèse tries to quiet the growing storm around them.

Meanwhile, there is another man asleep in Thérèse’s compartment on the train—the doctor [Nerio Bernardi]. On seeing the newspaper reports, he travels to Lyon and asks for half a million francs to stay silent. The couple manage to scrape together 400,000 francs, which he accepts and even signs a receipt for, but fate intervenes when, as he leaves, he is struck and killed by a lorry. Georgette [Maria Pia Casilio], the maid in his hotel, is left to manage the fallout, and she is entrusted with a letter that could change everything if it ever surfaces.

The tension between desire and duty propels the story forward as Thérèse and Laurent navigate the precarious ground they stand on. The money, the hidden letter, and the shadow of Camille’s death all converge, leaving the ending open to interpretation while underscoring the peril that accompanies a life built on secrecy. In the final moments, the maid’s careful action with the letter hints at consequences still to come, even as the immediate crisis passes and the couple faces the uncertain road ahead.
