Born in Los Angeles to June (née Shoard) and Richard Crang, she grew up on the West Coast and entered the entertainment world after being discovered performing at the Macayo Club, which led to chorus‑girl work in Here Come the Girls (1953) and a coveted Theatre World Award for her Broadway debut in Hazel Flagg. After signing a four‑year Fox contract in 1954, the studio heavily promoted her, even placing her on the cover of Life magazine with the bold claim that she would “take over from Marilyn Monroe,” a narrative that sparked intense media scrutiny and occasional scandal, such as the 8 mm bikini footage that Fox leveraged for publicity.
