Lionel Carpenter Billy Crystal is a night-school teacher who has notoriously bad luck with women. He remains a virgin until his brash cousin Danny Alex Rocco volunteers to set him up with a one-night stand. Soon after, Lionel starts feeling nauseated and vomits, eventually splashing his misfortune onto Segoynia Savaka Joan Prather, one of his immigrant students. Rather than ruin his dignity, the embarrassing incident becomes a convenient excuse for him to ask her out, and what begins as awkward attraction grows into a tender romance.
When Lionel meets Segoynia’s fortune-telling grandmother in an improbable moment of theater, Segoynia Savaka’s Joan Prather mysterious relative, played by Roddy McDowall in drag, intuitively declares him to be the world’s first pregnant man. This bold, farcical premise kickstarts a whirlwind of sight gags and social uproar as Lionel navigates the uncharted waters of impending fatherhood. The humor alternates between physical comedy and gentle misunderstandings as friends, family, and curious strangers react to the idea that a man could carry a child. The situation also spirals into a broader comic-moral canvas, with the military stepping into the frame: the Army pursues Lionel because the President fears the societal ripples if the ability to conceive became widespread, threatening population dynamics and traditional roles.
Amid the chaos, the film leans into a playful, almost fairy-tale mood. The narrative builds toward a climactic sequence that nods to the Nativity: Lionel’s labor presumably signals a miraculous birth, blending whimsy with a sense of ceremonial awe. The final revelation rises above the ordinary as the heavens appear to witness the moment, culminating in a punchline that lands with a mix of absurdity and astonishment.
Oh my god… It’s a girl!
Throughout, the story balances absurdity with a breezy, lighthearted tone, inviting audiences to suspend disbelief and laugh at the notion of pregnancy, identity, and destiny colliding in the most unlikely of circumstances. The central romance between Lionel and Segoynia remains the emotional throughline, giving the film warmth even as it pushes the boundaries of its offbeat premise.
